Bipolar Disorder is a Psychosis

Bipolar disorder and schizophrenia are psychoses.  A psychosis is a severe mental disorder in which the person’s ability to recognize reality and his or her emotional responses, thinking processes, judgment and ability to communicate are so affected that his or her functioning is seriously impaired.  Hallucinations and delusions are common features of psychosis.

Bipolar disorder is one of the functional psychoses.  These are the disorders in which the changes in functioning cannot be attributed to any specific organic abnormality in the brain.  The term distinguishes them from such organic mental disorders as pre-senile dementia, drug-induced psychosis (like those caused by marijuana or amphetamine) or delirium tremens (secondary to alcohol withdrawal).
