Residential Treatment Facility
Our residential treatment center, Balsam House, provides clients with a comfortable home environment in which they receive the treatment and rehabilitation needed to recover from mental illness.
Residential treatment for bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other serious mental illness is provided for clients who are not yet ready for independent living. Services include:
- room and board
- medication management and monitoring
- individual and group therapy
- family counseling and support
- individualized treatment planning
- psychiatric services
- case management to access needed services, housing, and benefits
- socialization and recreational activities
- psychosocial rehabilitation including supported employment and educational support
The home atmosphere and small group dynamics at Balsam House encourage and support clients while they deal with the challenges of living with a condition like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Residents are involved in an innovative daily program of group and individual therapy, social activities and daily tasks geared towards the enhancement of social and practical living skills.
Balsam House is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by skilled professional staff who provide a full range of psychiatric services and are able to respond promptly to the needs of the resident. The treatment team, consisting of multiple psychiatrists, registered nurses and licensed master’s level behavioral health professionals, meets Monday through Friday mornings to discuss each resident’s care and treatment planning. Clients meet with their psychiatrist and therapist several times per week. Medications are administered by a registered nurse or other qualified professional staff.
Balsam House is an attractive comfortable home located in a residential area close to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The house has four single and two double bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and large comfortable living areas. There are pleasant outdoor areas in which to sit and talk and enjoy the quiet neighborhood atmosphere and the view of the mountains. Balsam House is within walking distance to unique downtown Boulder, shops, cafes, art galleries, medical facilities, parks, hiking trails, recreational center and community garden.

The Balsam House therapists and staff are “artful” in their ability to deal with resistance and provide an integrated approach that meets the specific needs of each patient. My son began with residential treatment that included individual therapy, family sessions, group therapy, medical management, daily living responsibilities and many creative therapies (art, writing, running, Tai Chi, equestrian therapy, music therapy, sports and community outings etc.). Balsam House has helped him develop the self-control necessary to understand and manage his medical, mental, physical and emotional needs.
