Dual diagnosis treatment in Denver, Colorado

When mental health symptoms and substance use are affecting each other, treating only one part of the problem can leave you feeling stuck in the same cycle.

You may have already tried therapy, substance use treatment, medication, or short-term stabilization without experiencing the lasting change you hoped for.

Dual diagnosis treatment addresses both concerns together.

Nebraska landscape

At The Raleigh House, clients receive integrated mental health and addiction treatment from fully licensed, well-tenured behavioral health clinicians who understand how closely these conditions can be connected.

Our Denver-area programs combine evidence-based clinical care with experiential and holistic therapies through our East Meets West approach. The goal is not simply to manage symptoms. It is to understand what is driving them and help you build a healthier, more sustainable way forward.

What is dual diagnosis?

Dual diagnosis describes the presence of both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder. These are also known as co-occurring disorders.

The relationship between the two is not always straightforward. Some people begin using alcohol or other substances to manage anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, emotional distress, or difficulty sleeping. Over time, substance use can make those symptoms more intense or create additional challenges.

In other cases, prolonged substance use may contribute to changes in mood, thinking, behavior, or emotional regulation. It is not always possible to determine which concern developed first, and effective treatment does not depend on assigning blame to one condition or the other.

Several factors may influence co-occurring conditions:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Trauma or prolonged stress
  • Family and relationship dynamics
  • Environmental instability
  • Physical health concerns
  • Changes in brain chemistry
  • Limited access to healthy coping strategies or support

According to SAMHSA, integrated care can improve outcomes by addressing mental health and substance use concerns at the same time.

Common co-occurring conditions

Co-occurring disorders can look different for every person. Substance use may temporarily mask symptoms, intensify them, or make it more difficult to recognize an underlying mental health condition.

Some of the mental health conditions commonly treated alongside substance use disorders include:

  • Depression: Persistent sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest, low energy, or difficulty functioning may contribute to substance use as a way to escape emotional pain.
  • Anxiety disorders: Chronic worry, panic attacks, social anxiety, or physical symptoms of fear may lead someone to rely on alcohol or other substances for temporary relief.
  • Post-traumatic stress: Trauma-related memories, nightmares, hypervigilance, avoidance, or emotional numbness may become closely connected to patterns of substance use.
  • Bipolar disorder: Changes in mood, energy, sleep, judgment, and activity levels can complicate substance use and require coordinated psychiatric and therapeutic care.

The Raleigh House also treats clients experiencing ADHD, attachment concerns, complex trauma, mood disorders, neurodivergence, and other behavioral health conditions.

A professional assessment can help clarify what you are experiencing and determine the most appropriate level of care.

How we treat dual diagnosis

Dual diagnosis treatment should not feel like two separate programs happening at the same time. Mental health and substance use concerns need to be addressed within one coordinated treatment plan.

At The Raleigh House, treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment of your mental health symptoms, substance use, medical history, medications, relationships, living environment, previous treatment experiences, and personal goals. This information allows the clinical team to develop an individualized plan based on the full picture, not just the most visible symptoms.

Depending on your needs, care may include:

  • Individual therapy to explore personal patterns, trauma, emotional concerns, and recovery goals
  • Group therapy to build connection, practice new skills, and learn from shared experiences
  • Family systems therapy to improve communication, establish healthier boundaries, and support healing within important relationships
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to identify and change unhelpful thought and behavior patterns
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to strengthen emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal skills
  • Psychiatric support and medication management when clinically appropriate
  • Medication-assisted treatment when appropriate as part of a broader treatment plan
  • Experiential therapies that allow clients to work through emotions, relationships, trust, and behavioral patterns in active ways
  • Nutrition, movement, mindfulness, and other holistic services that support physical and emotional well-being

This is part of The Raleigh House’s East Meets West philosophy: evidence-based treatment combined with experiential and holistic care for the mind, body, and soul.

A clinical team with time to know you

The quality of dual diagnosis care depends heavily on the experience and availability of the clinical team.

The Raleigh House maintains a 5:1 or lower client-to-clinician ratio.

All clinicians are fully licensed, well-tenured behavioral health professionals—no interns or unlicensed personnel carry client caseloads. This allows clients to receive individual therapy at least twice each week and gives the clinical team time to understand how symptoms, substance use, relationships, trauma, and daily stressors interact.

One connected continuum of care

Treatment needs can change as you become more stable and begin taking on greater independence.

The Raleigh House offers a full continuum of care, including detox and stabilization, residential treatment, Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), supportive housing, and continuing care.

For clients who need 24-hour structure, the inpatient rehab program provides an immersive environment for stabilization and deeper clinical work. Clients may then transition into outpatient services as they prepare to return to work, family, and community responsibilities.

Clinical and experiential programming continues on Saturdays and Sundays. Recovery work does not pause for the weekend, and neither does the support available to clients.

Why choose The Raleigh House for dual diagnosis treatment?

If you are comparing dual diagnosis treatment centers near Denver, it is important to look beyond a list of therapies.

Ask who will provide your care, how often you will meet with them, whether both conditions will be treated together, and what happens when your level of care changes.

  • Distinct countryside and Denver Tech Center treatment environments with the same clinical standard

The Raleigh House serves adults 18 and older, including adults over age 65 who may have difficulty finding an appropriate behavioral health program elsewhere.

Getting started

You do not need to know your diagnosis or determine the right program before calling. The Raleigh House admissions process begins with a confidential conversation about what you are experiencing and what kind of support you may need.

An admissions coordinator may ask about your mental health symptoms, substance use, medications, medical needs, safety, support system, previous treatment, and current living environment. These questions help the team determine whether The Raleigh House is an appropriate fit and which level of care may provide the right amount of structure.

The admissions team can also complete an insurance verification and explain available payment options. Coverage varies by plan, and verification is not a guarantee of payment, but it can help you better understand your benefits and potential out-of-pocket costs before treatment begins.

Frequently asked questions

What is dual diagnosis?

Dual diagnosis means that a person is experiencing both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder. The conditions may influence each other, even when it is unclear which developed first.

Can mental health and addiction be treated at the same time?

Yes. Integrated treatment addresses mental health and substance use concerns within one coordinated plan. This allows clinicians to consider how symptoms, medications, substance use, trauma, relationships, and other factors affect one another.

Does insurance cover dual diagnosis treatment?

Many commercial insurance plans include behavioral health and substance use benefits, but coverage depends on the plan, medical necessity, level of care, authorization requirements, deductible, and out-of-network benefits. The Raleigh House admissions team can verify your benefits and explain the information provided by your insurer.

What conditions commonly co-occur with substance use?

Depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, bipolar disorder, ADHD, mood disorders, attachment concerns, and complex trauma may occur alongside substance use disorders. Only a qualified professional can provide an accurate diagnosis after completing an assessment.
